My Denmark journal -1. Billund

Hej allesammen!

It has been a while since I last wrote, I don’t know if I was busy or too lazy, but it just didn’t happen. Anyway, in the last two months I have been living in Denmark as an Erasmus student and I choose this experience because I wanted to know more about nordic culture. In the past article I put down beautiful words about Copenhagen and introduced you a little to my new home country, but this time I want to take you with me all over the country ( we all know that there is more to discover about a country outside its capital).

Last week we had a semester break, so the best option seemed to be a road trip in different cities of Viking’s world. Me and other three friends choose to rent a car for this week and to stay in Airbnb homes, the reason might be obvious because is cheaper this way, but in fact we wanted to get to know locals and get closer to Danish way of living. I can say that it was the best choice as we not only made new friends, but got a lot of inputs and tips for our trip which helped us a lot.

During this trip we visited around nine different places and cities and in this post I want to talk about our first destination which was Billund.

Billund is known to be the heart of anything related to LEGO, everything started in this little city of Denmark and now all of us around the world know about LEGO bricks and amusement parks.

Why is this city impressive?

Because except the LEGO Park, the history of these toys lay everywhere: here are LEGO hotels, hostels and camping places; there is a LEGO House which is kind of museum, but you can find there shops and restaurants as well; they even have a LEGO SCHOOL! yes, a school! and is actually a very popular one because it does not work in a traditional way, the classes are meant to let the kids use their imagination and the goal is to make them learn by playing…and IS WORKING!

Of course, we were there for the amusement part which I have to tell you: if you like adrenaline, this park is more focused on the LEGO theme than on having breathtaking rollercoasters.

We enjoy it a lot even if me and my friends usually opt for more “extreme” fun parks and had the chance to be children again for one day !

Since we were the in October, the Halloween theme made us a nice surprise and the had a more “scary” experience than expected.

My personal favourite spot is the aquarium, which is pretty big and besides seeing the underwater life, I could actually experience it!

There are also the famous miniatures and in Billund park they take you all around the world, from Paris to New York and Dubai.

All in all, I recommend this place in case you visit Denmark as it is part of its history and it will make you see another side of Danish culture, BUT if you look only for a LEGO park , I think the one in Germany is bigger than this one and more entertaining. It depends a lot on what you are looking for, still Billund will offer you a great time and a journey in the LEGO world.
